On the way home from our camping trip at Shell Island, we went and looked at Chirk, where Thomas Telford built one of 2 famous aquaducts on the Llangollen branch canal. This isn’t the most famous one, but is still a magnificent structure, which prompted the railway architects to go one better and make the viaduct higher and longer! Straight after the canal passes over the aquaduct, into Wales, it enter Chirk tunnel. The tunnel has a towpath, and we walked along it, just in time to see a boat passing and lighting up the tunnel. Such a strange and surreal sight and sound…..anyway, if you get the chance, take a trip to Chirk, it is really impressive!
