Recently I’ve come across many times when I need to transfer data across from hard drives etc. and it can be very slow across our wireless and wired network here. I’m hoping to speed up the wired side, but in the meantime I managed to pick up a nice SATA hard drive dock. It was on offer from Maplins @ £19.99 (instead of £29.99) so I did a click and collect and off I went!
It installs really easily, just plug in the leads, 1 USB and 1 power, turn it on, and the drivers under Win 7 are automatically installed. Slot hard drive in through the sprung cover, and it appears straight away!
Once in Windows the drive and memory card slots appear, and off you go! I transferred quite a few files around and it’s pretty nippy, I saw about 30 – 40 meg a second, so a full dvd takes about a minute give or take a bit. That’s much faster than my network currently, so I’m pleased. The device also features a couple of USB ports on the front and a slew of card slots, all worked as expected!
So, I’d give this a solid 9 out of 10 – things I’d improve, well the mains adapter isn’t the best built item in the world, and the glossy plastic will soon get scratched, but apart from that, it does what is expected and well! Recommended if you need this kind of thing…
